American companies will never be able to resist the demands of American intelligence services. It doesn't matter if their servers are located in Virginia or Paris or on the damn moon.
Although the author does not mention alternatives, I think he makes a a strong case for self-hosted services (such as Nextcloud).

Under the title Data in Motion this track focuses on the deployment of data in research and the versatility of the domain that concentrates on this way of doing science. A panel, presentations and small pitches, illustrated by video or demo's, will sketch the fruits of escience and data science, and thus demonstrate the need for an RDA in support of research. Also the formation of a European Platform for e-science and data research centers will be highlighted during this session.
Video 1h 20 min. Presented by Patrick Aerts and Paul Groth.
Fun little map-based game.

This looks quite exciting. I hope to get the time to test it.
There's of course Hypothes.is, which is an open standard, but this being built on Matrix makes it all new and shiny :-)

During the last two decades, China has made two-thirds of the world’s bicycles (60-70 million of 110 million annually). Most of the rest come from other Asian countries. Europe is back to producing ten million bikes annually, but the US only manufactures 60,000 bicycles per year.

This is the only decent one, as far as I know.
By that I mean it does what it says, runs no ads, and handles your recording strictly client-side.
Recently installed a new webcam by my office computer. Not long after, a thought materialised: should it not be possible to view the video feed over a remote SSH tunnel?
Indeed, here's one way to do it (I have not bothered connecting to the camera's builtin microphone, but that should be possible):
